Homeowners Claims

Would you believe that most people who have a homeowners insurance policy are not prepared to make a claim should the need arise? It’s true. Even after the review with their insurance agent, they soon forget what is covered and what is not and what kind of dollar limits for each loss they have. Partly, it is because insurance can be a “boring” topic to discuss so they do not tend to remember this informaion, but most often, it is in how the insurance agent relates to an insured.

A lot of insurance agents do not take the time to clarify with an insured, in simplfied terms, what exactly is covered under their policy. Yes, they do show them page by page of the printed policy and explain the coverages, and do it quickly. But shortly after the insured leaves the office, there is no reinforcement of what they did learn about their policy. A very good insurance agent will contact the insured at regular intervals to check up on any situations that changed in the insured’s lives that could affect coverages and premium.

An outstanding insurance agent will make sure the insured has a packet that includes any and all paperwork to file a claim when the need arises. Some of the important items in this packet could be; insurance claim forms, inventory worksheets for notating all valuable personal property and their current replacement value, an envelope to hold receipts of valuable items such as jewelry appraisals, another envelope to hold either a computer disk of digital pictures of personal belongings or hard copies of pictures, a checklist that shows step by step what to do when making a claim, a master list of important phone numbers to call in case of an emergency, another envelope that holds receipts for minor and major repairs to your home, and a list showing all safety devices installed in your home.

As you can see by the extensive list we mentioned, most homeowners probably do not have anything near this. It is not too late to either contact your insurance agent to request a “claim” packet or you could even gather these lists and envelopes yourself.

Protect Your Car From Theft

According to statistics provided by the City of Scottsdale Office, more than half of all vehicles stolen were unlocked during the theft and what’s even worse is the keys were left in the car! Well, talk about “crimes of opportunity!”

Here is what you can do right now to avoid theft of your vehicle as well as preventing theft to your personal property inside.

  1. Lock your doors
  2. Roll up the windows
  3. Hide personal property that is in plain view. Stash them under the seat if you have to
  4. Never leave spare keys inside the car
  5. Use anti theft devices such as the “steering wheel club,” wheel locks, or other types of anti theft devices.
  6. Park in well lit areas
  7. Invest in on board GPS systems like “LoJack” and other Geo devices in case your car does get stolen, it’s location can be traced right away
  8. Finally, just use common sense where you park your car. Park where there is other cars. Parking in a bad neighborhood or in the dark is just asking for trouble

Quite often if we just think things through, without stressing, and take percautions to make sure you secured your car is the best things to do.

Have a safe summer.

Time to Review Your Insurance Needs

When was the last time you spoke with your insurance agent regarding any changes in your life? Since your last conversation with your insurance agent, you may have;

  1. gotten married
  2. gotten divorced
  3. moved
  4. bought a new car
  5. given birth to a child
  6. added a section to the house
  7. your child’s first year driving a car
  8. upgraded your alarm system
  9. started a business in your house

The list can go on and on and you wouldn’t even notice that you have to alert your insurance agent with these changes.

That last thing you want to do is find out that your insurance policy does not cover a particular loss because you did not include it in a rider. Some changes can result in downsizing your premiums. Wouldn’t it be nice to take advantage of saving money just from an insurance review?

All About Homeowners Insurance Coverage

As a Scottsdale Insurance Agent, I have the responsibility of going over all the coverages of our insureds homeowners policy. Quite often I get asked really what is covered through the homeowners policy.  I have attached a really cool video that covers just about all the most common questions. Take a look at this video and post your comments.

Insurance Tips for Young Drivers In Your Household

The bad news! National statistics have proven that, if you have a youthful driver in your household, premiums are usually rated higher because of the higher rate of collisions and liability claims that arise from this group. Of course, the main culprit here is inexperience. Underwriters have long been in the know about this so, hence the stricter requirements on the premium rates.

The good news, is that you can do something right now to maximize the discounts and keeping the youthful driver premium at the lowest level you can generate.

Here are 4 tips you can use to control the youth premium right now:

  1. Buy a “conservative” car. You are not doing yourself a favor by getting your son or daughter a sports car, SUV, or deluxe high performance vehicle. Just think for a moment how much the upkeep is on something like if your child gets into a collision. Nightmare for you! So choose wisely, a conservative small four door sedan that has good protection of “metal” around the driver and occupants along with a good safety record of performance.
  2. Be a good citizen. It helps to keep the underwriters of your policy to know your child is involved in community service, keeps good grades in school, and stays out of trouble.
  3. Clean record. This goes along with #2 in being a good citizen. If your son/daughter has a record of felony, moving violations, credit problems or anything that can dampen one’s character, it will be a concern.
  4. Lastly, safety features of the primary vehicle of your child. Does it have anti-lock brakes? Side air bags? Auto seat belts? Just a few safety features that will also “score brownie points” with your insurance company.

In other words, the reality is that, if you have youthful drivers in your household, it can’t help but drive your overall “family plan” insurance premium higher, but you need to know the things you can control to maximize savings to lower the premiums as best as you can. Follow the above tips and you will know you got the best price on your premiums

Pool Safety

children pool 2In the following are just a few facts uncovered by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in a comprehensive study of drowning and submersion incidents involving children under 5 years old in Arizona, California, and Florida;

Seventy-five percent of the submersion victims studied by CPSC were between 1 and 3 years old; 65 percent of this group were boys. Toddlers, in particular, often do something unexpected because their capabilities change daily.

At the time of the incidents, most victims were being supervised by one or both parents. Forty-six percent of the victims were last seen in the house; 23 percent were last seen in the yard or on the porch or patio; and 31 percent were in or around the pool before the accident. In all, 69 percent of the children were not expected to be at or in the pool, yet they were found in the water.

Submersion incidents involving children usually happen in familiar surroundings. Sixty-five percent of the incidents happened in a pool owned by the child’s family and 33 percent of the incidents happened in a pool owned by friends or relatives.

Pool submersions involving children happen quickly. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer a phone. Seventy-seven percent of the victims had been missing from sight for 5 minutes or less.

Survival depends on rescuing the child quickly and restarting the breathing process, even while the child is still in the water. Seconds count in preventing death or brain damage.

Child drowning is a silent death. There’s no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble.

There are several ways of preventing this needless loss of life. Here is the list:

  1. Barriers include a fence or wall
  2. Door alarms which can be Battery and electrically powered from the home
  3. A power safety cover is a motor powered barrier that can be placed over the water area. Motor-driven covers easily open and close over the pool
  4. Lastly, just make sure there is someone that knows how to swim, be on site. If you have children, it could be an adult that is just stationed at the pool. To be there to notice if anyone is having trouble in the pool and can be saved in an instant is a great peace of mind!

Just remember that if you own a pool, you "own the responsibility" of keeping it safe!

Prepare Your Vehicle Before Vacation

The one thing we take for granted when we plan our summer vacation is a complete inspection our vehicle, if we are using it to transport to our destination. We are all excited about where we are going to spend the vacation but risk getting broken down on some highway we never traveled before. That’s the fastest way of disappointment!

One of the most important things you can do is to go over all the maintenance details of your vehicle. Here are some things to watch for:

  1. Check tire pressure and make sure air is filled to factory specs
  2. Make sure all tire valves have caps on them
  3. Have your wheels properly aligned and balanced
  4. Check and make sure you had your oil checked per schedule
  5. Get a “spot check” on all rubber belts and hoses
  6. Get a first aid kit to keep on board
  7. Carry jumper cables and emergency reflectors or flares
  8. Check all important fluid levels such as windshield, transmission, etc.
  9. Have a flashlight handy

You get the picture, planning a vaction is one thing, and more importantly making a checklist on your vehicle maintenance is going to ensure your vacation is a pleasant and unforgettable one!
