Homeowners Claims

Would you believe that most people who have a homeowners insurance policy are not prepared to make a claim should the need arise? It’s true. Even after the review with their insurance agent, they soon forget what is covered and what is not and what kind of dollar limits for each loss they have. Partly, it is because insurance can be a “boring” topic to discuss so they do not tend to remember this informaion, but most often, it is in how the insurance agent relates to an insured.

A lot of insurance agents do not take the time to clarify with an insured, in simplfied terms, what exactly is covered under their policy. Yes, they do show them page by page of the printed policy and explain the coverages, and do it quickly. But shortly after the insured leaves the office, there is no reinforcement of what they did learn about their policy. A very good insurance agent will contact the insured at regular intervals to check up on any situations that changed in the insured’s lives that could affect coverages and premium.

An outstanding insurance agent will make sure the insured has a packet that includes any and all paperwork to file a claim when the need arises. Some of the important items in this packet could be; insurance claim forms, inventory worksheets for notating all valuable personal property and their current replacement value, an envelope to hold receipts of valuable items such as jewelry appraisals, another envelope to hold either a computer disk of digital pictures of personal belongings or hard copies of pictures, a checklist that shows step by step what to do when making a claim, a master list of important phone numbers to call in case of an emergency, another envelope that holds receipts for minor and major repairs to your home, and a list showing all safety devices installed in your home.

As you can see by the extensive list we mentioned, most homeowners probably do not have anything near this. It is not too late to either contact your insurance agent to request a “claim” packet or you could even gather these lists and envelopes yourself.

Over the years, we have been very fortunate to have met wonderful people, assisted successful businesses with their insurance needs, and made long lasting friendships.

As we reflect on all the years we have been helping people with their insurance needs, we find that there is nothing that can compare to the feeling we get when an insured makes a claim and we can indeed make a difference in helping them to get back to where they were before the loss occured.

For those of you who have come to this blog for the first time, please pass the word along to visit here. We plan on many new things here that will keep you interested.

As we bid farewell to 2009 and ring in 2010, we wish all our valued customers and business associates a very successful and prosperous New Year!

Year End Review Of Your Insurance Coverage

As we near the year end of 2009, it is a good time to think about reviewing your coverage. Ask youself, what major or minor changes have occured in your household. Did anyone move in? Did anyone move out? Did you do any home improvements? Did you buy more jewelry? Almost any type of change in your family, your family members or change in your home situation can all have an effect on your insurance coverage.

Did you know that a little change such as the youngest member of the family turning 25 years old can lower the insurance premium by a sizeable amount?

Here are some other things to think about when reviewing your current insurance coverage with your insurance agent.

  • Raising your collision deductible or even cancelling collision deductible for an older vehicle in the household.
  • Deleting floater coverage on  items in the house that you no longer own.
  • Did you install a new fire/security alarm system in the house this year and not claim your homeowners discount?
  • Did a family member finally quit smoking for good?
  • Raise coverage on a specialty item that you recently purchased.
  • Raise personal property coverage on added computers in the house.
  • Did you make any noticeable home improvements since your last review?

These and many other situations can contribute to you saving paying more insurance premium than you have too. The most important thing to know is that you make certain you have enough insurance to cover what you may think you have.

The tragedy of many insureds is that you assume you have coverage on something or a situation that you really do not and find out that there is no coverage. If only you reviewed your coverage with your insurance agent before a loss!!

Be prepared is to be forearmed!!

Have a save and prosperous holiday!

5 Tips on How to Avoid Insurance Scams

When purchasing insurance, for the most part, it is a safe bet to secure your policy from a reputable insurance agent. But there are some people out there that want very cheap rates, and will seek this cheap insurance in other than obvious places.

Here are some tips on how to avoid getting scammed from an unscrupulous agent.

  1. Be aware of companies or individual agents that say they can insure you no matter what your past driving record or past claims history has been. Under normal circumstances, even if you were to be insured with that profile, you would be given a fairly long waiting period and an extremely high premium quote.
  2. Make sure that the company name is correctly spelled. Quite often scammers will make up a company name that sounds very similar to a well known and reputable company.
  3. Be very suspicious if the agent (scammer) will take money by wire or direct deposit into an account right away.  You should take your time to investigate the legitimacy of the company by checking in with the department of insurance in your state and do some simple research on the internnet. Being “rushed” is certainly a “red flag.”
  4. Be suspicious of getting mailers soliciting “great insurance” deals. This also applies to insurance sales pitches that you receive via fax. A lot of scammers don’t advertise in the Yellow Pages or “legitimate” publications because they know it is against the law to publish in them.
  5. Also, check with references, friends, family and business acquaintences about a particular insurance company you are interested in. Talking to someone who already has a policy with the company being reviewed is the best way to go. That way, you can find out how the company performance is, claims service, and most importantly, how legitimate the company is.

Of course, there are many more ways to “filter” out a scammer from a legitimate company. Just make sure you investigate as thorough as you can.

Specialty Insurance Coverage

Nowadays, when you find that more of your “prized possesions” such as motorcycles, boats, travel trailers, snowmobiles, etc., are located on your residential property, do you really know if you have the proper coverage on them?

Specialty Personal Lines

In this post, we will focus on an exellent company, Foremost Insurance Group, that is the recognized leader in the Specialty Personal Lines market. It started back in 1952 when they were the first insurance company to write coverage for moblie homes. They have broadened their product line and refined the policy with years of knowledge and experience. NO OTHER SPECIALTY insurer can match that.

Here is the items that Formost can write insurance on:
Motorcycles, Off road vehicles, Snowmobiles, Personal Watercraft, Boats, Yachts, Motorhomes, Travel Trailers, Mobile Homes, Dwelling Fire or Landlord policies, and NON standard homeowners policies.

Formost’s motto is “To be committed to make it easy for the customer to do business with us.”

  1. By flexible billing. There are many payment options to meet client’s needs.
  2. Excellent claims. Quickly and efficiently, experienced adjusters, they can write checks on the spot. They all have laptop PC’s and digital cameras so fast, accurate decisions on coverage can be made.
  3. Great customer service. The Claims hotline is  1-800-527-3907. Claims service is available at www.foremost.com

The difference you find with Foremost’s SPECIALIZED coverages versus and endorsement on an AUTO or HOME policy is like NIGHT and DAY. Usually the endorsements on the auto or home policy are very limited. They could be missing out on important coverages they are not even aware of.

How You Know You Have a Great Insurance Agent

We are going to expand on the previous post by adding the characterisitcs of a GREAT agent! Please enjoy….

Many times when we hire a lawyer, a dentist, a plumber, etc., it is because we have an immediate need. Seldom is it that we take the time to “shop” for these service providers with enough time to thoroughly check out everything we should.

Here are several tips when knowing you have a great insurance agent.

  • Agent has empathy to your unique situation
  • Carefully reveiws every available coverage you may need to protect you, your business, and your family without the “salesy” pitch
  • Will answer any and all your questions, even if it takes all day
  • Goes over the claims process in advance so you are not “lost” during a time when you need to know immediately what to do in case of a claim
  • Keeps in touch with you at least on a quarterly basis to see if you need to make changes to your coverage for whatever the reason
  • Makes a concerted effort to save you money via quantity discounts, preferred risk discounts, etc.
  • Is knowledgeable in most aspects of the insurance policy. What the agent does not know, he should be able to find you answers right away

Most of the above items are common sense, but you would be surprised at how many people will purchase insurance policies without getting information that is a matter of “life and death” sometimes and find out it is too late to get coverage on something that is not covered due to the short comings of the insurance agent.

Seek your new insurance agent with care!
