Keep Your Home Safe

Well, I found a video where, for under $400, you can literally protect your home and get a homeowners insurance discount just for purchasing these types of items. Enjoy the video.

Time to Review Your Insurance Needs

When was the last time you spoke with your insurance agent regarding any changes in your life? Since your last conversation with your insurance agent, you may have;

  1. gotten married
  2. gotten divorced
  3. moved
  4. bought a new car
  5. given birth to a child
  6. added a section to the house
  7. your child’s first year driving a car
  8. upgraded your alarm system
  9. started a business in your house

The list can go on and on and you wouldn’t even notice that you have to alert your insurance agent with these changes.

That last thing you want to do is find out that your insurance policy does not cover a particular loss because you did not include it in a rider. Some changes can result in downsizing your premiums. Wouldn’t it be nice to take advantage of saving money just from an insurance review?

Insurance Tips for Young Drivers In Your Household

The bad news! National statistics have proven that, if you have a youthful driver in your household, premiums are usually rated higher because of the higher rate of collisions and liability claims that arise from this group. Of course, the main culprit here is inexperience. Underwriters have long been in the know about this so, hence the stricter requirements on the premium rates.

The good news, is that you can do something right now to maximize the discounts and keeping the youthful driver premium at the lowest level you can generate.

Here are 4 tips you can use to control the youth premium right now:

  1. Buy a “conservative” car. You are not doing yourself a favor by getting your son or daughter a sports car, SUV, or deluxe high performance vehicle. Just think for a moment how much the upkeep is on something like if your child gets into a collision. Nightmare for you! So choose wisely, a conservative small four door sedan that has good protection of “metal” around the driver and occupants along with a good safety record of performance.
  2. Be a good citizen. It helps to keep the underwriters of your policy to know your child is involved in community service, keeps good grades in school, and stays out of trouble.
  3. Clean record. This goes along with #2 in being a good citizen. If your son/daughter has a record of felony, moving violations, credit problems or anything that can dampen one’s character, it will be a concern.
  4. Lastly, safety features of the primary vehicle of your child. Does it have anti-lock brakes? Side air bags? Auto seat belts? Just a few safety features that will also “score brownie points” with your insurance company.

In other words, the reality is that, if you have youthful drivers in your household, it can’t help but drive your overall “family plan” insurance premium higher, but you need to know the things you can control to maximize savings to lower the premiums as best as you can. Follow the above tips and you will know you got the best price on your premiums

Year End Review Of Your Insurance Coverage

As we near the year end of 2009, it is a good time to think about reviewing your coverage. Ask youself, what major or minor changes have occured in your household. Did anyone move in? Did anyone move out? Did you do any home improvements? Did you buy more jewelry? Almost any type of change in your family, your family members or change in your home situation can all have an effect on your insurance coverage.

Did you know that a little change such as the youngest member of the family turning 25 years old can lower the insurance premium by a sizeable amount?

Here are some other things to think about when reviewing your current insurance coverage with your insurance agent.

  • Raising your collision deductible or even cancelling collision deductible for an older vehicle in the household.
  • Deleting floater coverage on  items in the house that you no longer own.
  • Did you install a new fire/security alarm system in the house this year and not claim your homeowners discount?
  • Did a family member finally quit smoking for good?
  • Raise coverage on a specialty item that you recently purchased.
  • Raise personal property coverage on added computers in the house.
  • Did you make any noticeable home improvements since your last review?

These and many other situations can contribute to you saving paying more insurance premium than you have too. The most important thing to know is that you make certain you have enough insurance to cover what you may think you have.

The tragedy of many insureds is that you assume you have coverage on something or a situation that you really do not and find out that there is no coverage. If only you reviewed your coverage with your insurance agent before a loss!!

Be prepared is to be forearmed!!

Have a save and prosperous holiday!

Saving Insurance Premium on Homeowners Insurance

I found a great video that gives you an easy to remember list of things to think about when you want to save on your insurance premium on homeowners insurance. Check out this video here.

Saving Money on Homeowners Insurance

How to save on your auto insurance premiums

There are many things you can do to avoid high auto insurance premiums. Here is a short list of those things:

  1. A safe driving record. It certainly pays to have an accident free driving record. This is the first thing the insurance underwriters look for when approving a hefty discount on premiums.
  2. If all your cars are with one insurance company. The all famous “car discount” is when all vehicles within one household is covered with the same insurance agent under the same insurance policy.
  3. Additionally, if you home insurance is also included with the property casualty insurance company, will also add to an overall insurance discount. This is called a “multi-line” discount.
  4. If your household does not smoke, this qualifies for another great discount.
  5. Usually if the youngest driver age in the household is is at least 25 years old, this also qualifies for a discount.
  6. Lastly, raising all your deductibles is a great way to decrease premiums. This enables the insured to take up more of the financial responsibility, thus giving a discount from the insurance company to the insured.

What is most important is to compare premiums with one company to another. There can be great differences between companies just because of the unique underwriter requirements or state rulings over each insurance company.

Whatever the case, it is buyer beware.

What Kind of Insurance Coverage Do You Need?

Having auto insurance is having “peace of mind.” It is security, knowing your auto is protected, your person, your guests in the auto and other drivers.

The first thing you need to do when looking for insurance coverage is to find out what is mandatory in your state. Most likely there is a requirement to have the minimum coverage of liability. For example, the miminum liablity requirements in the state of Arizona is “15/30,” which means for any single occurance, $15,000 covers any one person/property damage, or a total of $30,000 is available to cover the total number of people’s injuries and property damage.

In some states, uninsurance/underinsurance maybe be required or not. Uninsurance covers you, the insured if the facts show that the other party, at fault for the collision does not carry liability insurance.

Other common insurance coverage is collision, which covers the damage to your auto in the event of a collision. Comprehensive coverage applies to all other damages to your auto such as theft or rocks flying in the air and hits your auto.

Other popular coverages are medical pay and towing. For any other coverages, quite often it will be extended coverage or specialty category.

When reviewing auto insurance coverage with your agent, make sure you only purchase coverages which only applies to what your needs are.

How You Know You Have a Great Insurance Agent

We are going to expand on the previous post by adding the characterisitcs of a GREAT agent! Please enjoy….

Many times when we hire a lawyer, a dentist, a plumber, etc., it is because we have an immediate need. Seldom is it that we take the time to “shop” for these service providers with enough time to thoroughly check out everything we should.

Here are several tips when knowing you have a great insurance agent.

  • Agent has empathy to your unique situation
  • Carefully reveiws every available coverage you may need to protect you, your business, and your family without the “salesy” pitch
  • Will answer any and all your questions, even if it takes all day
  • Goes over the claims process in advance so you are not “lost” during a time when you need to know immediately what to do in case of a claim
  • Keeps in touch with you at least on a quarterly basis to see if you need to make changes to your coverage for whatever the reason
  • Makes a concerted effort to save you money via quantity discounts, preferred risk discounts, etc.
  • Is knowledgeable in most aspects of the insurance policy. What the agent does not know, he should be able to find you answers right away

Most of the above items are common sense, but you would be surprised at how many people will purchase insurance policies without getting information that is a matter of “life and death” sometimes and find out it is too late to get coverage on something that is not covered due to the short comings of the insurance agent.

Seek your new insurance agent with care!
